The Doctoral College programme of generic research skills workshops are mapped to the Vitae Research Development Framework. The programme seeks to develop you as a researcher including the techniques and professional standards expected to do research, as well as the personal qualities, knowledge and skills to work with others and ensure the wider impact of research.Personal and professional development opportunities for research students are spread throughout the duration of the research degree and are grouped into 6 themed units:Unit 1: Finding your feet as a researcherUnit 2: Starting your researchUnit 3: Foundations for Conducting ResearchUnit 4: Completing your doctorate in a timely fashionUnit 5: Disseminating your researchUnit 6: Focusing on your careerFor more information visit theResearch Skills Development webpage

WLV Doctoral College: Researcher Development

Content: This series of writing events provides a forum for people engaged in writing to work in the company of other writers on a regular basis. Writing can be an isolating activity, is often thwarted by procrastination or riddled with interruptions. So to combat this and support your writing activities the Doctoral College provides space, time to write, writing resources and regular meeting times which we hope will lead to the development of a supportive writing community. We welcome people who want to write and are looking for the companionship of other writers. It doesn’t matter what you are writing; your thesis, papers, bids, books or book chapters, you will be welcome. There will be no critiquing, exercises, lectures, ego, competition or feeling guilty – just writing.
Meet-up Format Making the time to write each month is an empowering and ultimately rewarding experience and will help you develop a writing disciple. To join these writing sessions we ask that you make a commitment to attend the sessions each month; we would like to generate a cohort of writers who will be supportive to each other.
The outline for the session is below:

<LI>First 15 minutes – Writing goals for the session: Brief discussion about the aims each writer wishes to set themselves for the session.</LI>
<LI>30 minutes – writing session one: This is where you write.</LI>
<LI>5 minutes – Break</LI>
<LI>10 minutes – Quick update on goals and how you are progressing towards your goal.</LI>
<LI>60 minutes – writing session two: More writing.</LI>
<LI>30 minutes – Session summary How did you do?</LI>
