Raku and obvara taster class

Muddy Fingers PotteryJarrow, England
Sunday, Apr 26, 2026 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm GMT+1
Overview

Raku and Obvara taster session

We provide 3 pots, 2 for raku firing and 1 for obvara.

You get to use our fab range of raku glazes including metallics and various coloured crackle glazes. We will also show you resist techniques using tape and stickers.

Then we fire the pots in a kiln for around 25 minutes before taking them out at 1000 degrees c and placing them in a sawdust bin.

The smoke highlights the crazed and the reduction atmosphere will bring out golds, coppers and bronzes.

When they’re a bit cooler we wash them down in water and they’re ready to take away by the end of the session.

The next part of the session will use a flour or milk mix to make smoke and carbon patterns on the side of a bisque fired pot that’s been fired again in the kiln up to around 900 degrees c. We show you waxing and finishing options to make your pot look and smell gorgeous!

You must wear long sleeves, sensible shoes and trousers. Wear old clothes that you don’t mind smelling of smoke and be prepared for all weathers as this workshop is held outdoors.

No under 16’s and no refunds or transfers so please make sure you can make the date.
