Data has never mattered more. Our lives are increasingly shaped by it and how it is defined, collected and used. But who counts in the collection, analysis and application of data? Kevin Guyan will discuss key themes from his new book<a href="https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/queer-data-9781350230729/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Queer Data: Using Gender, Sex and Sexuality Data for Action</a> including the relationship between data and visibility, the politics of who and how to count, and how data biases are used to delegitimise the everyday experiences of queer communities.Kevin is a <a href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/cca/staff/kevinguyan/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Research Fellow in the School of Culture and Creative Arts </a>at the University of Glasgow. In 2016, Kevin completed a PhD in history at University College London and has written about LGBTQ data for publications including WIRED, The Independent and The Scotsman. He is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland, sits on Young Scot’s Data Advisory Group and the board of the LGBTI charity Equality Network.This session will consist of a ~20 minute presentation followed by Q&amp;A and discussion. We meet approximately once per month to discuss an LGBTQIA+ related paper. The reading group is informal, no prior knowledge is assumed or required, participation during the meeting is entirely voluntary, and it is open to all.
