Overview

Wednesday 15th March, 5.30-9.30pm (The Bonnington Centre)

Thursday 16th March, 5.30-9.30pm (Gasworks)

Taking the form of the reading group as its point of departure, artist Emma Haugh develops a new edition of her ongoing, roaming and mutating ‘Reading Troupe’ for a small group of participants; a performative workshop in Vauxhall across two consecutive evenings.

The Reading Troupe is an attempt to collectively enter the body of a chosen text through improvisation, amateur dramatics, gesture, collage, cut ups, interruption and other contingent forms, rather than analytic and academic language.

During this edition the Reading Troupe will investigate the text ‘TAZ: The Temporary Autonomous Zone’ by Hakim Bey, drawing together other textual and contextual fragments to collectively explore the wider project themes of residency and temporality.

The Reading Troupe is informed by Emma Haugh’s interest in representations of desire and the examination of cultural structures (architectural, linguistic, spatial, educational) from queerfeminist perspectives, and her training with Augusto Baol’s Theatre of the Oppressed. This will be the first UK iteration of the project.

Although the texts will be made available before the workshop, it is not compulsory to read them beforehand.

The first session will take place at The Bonnington Centre in Vauxhall. The second session will take place at Gasworks (155 Vauxhall Street, SE11 5RH). It is expected that participants will attend both sessions. Refreshments will be provided.
