Reboot: Two-Day Directing Workshop with Katie Mitchell

Since founding Clod Ensemble in 1995, director Suzy Willson and composer Paul Clark have developed a highly original performance language, creating provocative, finely-crafted work which is ambitious in scale and concept.Clod Ensemble works at the intersections where different artistic forms meet, transform and challenge each other, collaborating with dancers, actors, musicians, medics, architects and orchestras to create work which is presented in London, across the UK and internationally.Some of the theatres, dance houses, galleries and public spaces Clod Ensemble’s work has been presented in include Sadler’s Wells, Tate Modern, The Lowry Salford, Wales Millennium Centre, Serralves Museum Porto and Public Theater New York.

Reboot: Clod Ensemble Spring Workshop Season

Join Clod Ensemble across March and April for a season of workshops, talks and movement classes. Held both at Clod Ensemble’s studios and online, the season includes everything from masterclasses with world-leading directors to yoga sessions.

Please scroll down to find out more.A two-day workshop for directors and theatre makers interested in developing their skills and techniques as directors.In the workshop, Katie Mitchell will look at the core skills and key functions of the director role. Some of the areas which will be covered include techniques for text analysis, shaping a concept and working on composition. The workshop will also offer guidelines for working with design, lighting, video, sound, music and performers, and will include overviews of Katie’s work on Live Cinema and theatre about climate change.In a career spanning thirty years, director Katie Mitchell has helmed over one-hundred productions of theatre, opera, and live cinema (a unique combination of video and theatre techniques). She has directed nine productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, nineteen for the National Theatre and twelve for the Royal Court, and she has been an associate director at all three organisations. Her opera work includes directing for English National Opera, Glyndebourne Opera, Welsh National Opera and the Royal Opera House. She is currently a resident director at Berlin’s Schaubühne and Hamburg’s Deutsches Schauspielhaus, and she has recently finished a seven-year residency at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.Mitchell’s UK awards include two Time Out Awards, the Evening Standard’s Best Director Award and a Tonic Award for her representations of woman and nurturing of female talent. Her international awards include two Theatertreffen prizes, an Obie Award, two Golden Mask Awards, the Stanislavsky Prize, the Europe Theatre Prize for New Theatrical Realities and Best Director at the International Opera Awards. Her services to theatre have seen her awarded with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2009 and the British Academy&#x27;s President&#x27;s Medal in 2017.Mitchell is currently a Professor in Theatre Directing at Royal Holloway University, where she teaches on an MA directing course. Previous academic roles include Visiting Professor of Opera at Oxford University, Visiting Fellow at London’s Central Saint Martins and Honorary Fellow at Rose Bruford College. She is currently a Cultural Fellow at King&#x27;s College London, the TORCH Visiting Fellow in Theatre at Oxford University and Visiting Lecturer at Columbia University, New York.RebootClod Ensemble’s Reboot programme supports artists through providing a high-quality programme of professional development workshops. We recognise that costs can be a barrier to participation and are committed to making Reboot accessible by offering a range of free, subsidised and full price spaces across our programmes. Generous support from foundations and individual donations helps us to maintain this offer.We are able to offer fully-subsidised bursary places for five attendees for this workshop. These places are primarily designed to allow people on low incomes to access the Reboot programme.
