About this event

Site details: Kirkliston to Dalmeny Walkway is situated to the north-east of Kirkliston, to just south of Dalmeny and is located in the City of Edinburgh Council area within the vice-county of West Lothian vc84 (site centred on NT139754). The site comprises a 3km stretch of disused railway walkway with associated woodland, grassland and ruderal habitats.

Leaders: Jay MacKinnon (West Lothian vc84 Plant Recorder) and Natalie Harmsworth (TWIC). Contact mobile: 07818237795 (Natalie).

Aim: To record the different wildlife species present, including updating the vascular plant list for the site. The site was designated as a Local Biodiversity Site (LBS) by City of Edinburgh Council in 2013. Data generated from the outing will inform the re-assessment of the LBS to confirm whether the site still meets the criteria for an LBS.

Previous notable or protected species recorded on site include the following flowering plants: Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria), Giant Bellflower (Campanula latifolia), Small-fruited Prickly-sedge (Carex muricata subsp. pairae), Pale Willowherb (Epilobium roseum), Hemp-agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum), Large-flowered Hemp-nettle (Galeopsis speciosa), Burnet Rose (Rosa spinosissima), Tea-leaved Willow (Salix phylicifolia) and the mollusc, Worm Slug (Boettgerilla pallens).

Meeting details: Meet at 10:45 am at the entrance to the walkway in Kirkliston along Boathouse Bridge Road, Kirkliston, EH29 9ES (OS grid reference NT12837459 what3words: ///inert.await.fiction). Please note that the grid reference/ what3words reference is most accurate - the postcode will not take you to the exact meeting place. There is on-street parking nearby. Check Lothian Buses for public transport options (Lothian Bus X19 serves Kirkliston from central Edinburgh).

Requirements: Lunch and drink, outdoor footwear, waterproofs/ sunscreen and sunhat (as weather dictates). Optional – antibacterial hand gel (TWIC will have antibacterial hand gel available).

Suitable for: Recorders and local naturalists. Over 18s only.
