Camden Black Creatives (CBC) would like to invite individuals, specially young people of black descendant and young people that identify with black cultures, to have their portrait taken by Celebrity Photographer Violeta Sofia Mbassa. The portraits would focus on the topic of “Black Excellence” and the challenges black people face today regarding their identity.Do we try so hard to be perceived as strong, royalty and excellent that we lose ourselves in the process? How is this affecting future generations?The idea of being a “strong and black”, a “queen/king” or “Black Excellence” often involves the achievement of surpassing ordinary standards while displaying dignity and strength. “Black excellence” creates pressure on black individuals and it particularly affects the authenticity of the black youth as they struggle to form their own identity. They are robbed of the chance to transition into adulthood, stripped of softness or delicacy and expected to perform like superhumans while being treated as subhuman.Redefined excellence, will challenge the stereotype of being a “Black Excellence” and encourages especially the young people to express their authentic self and love who they are.About Violeta SofiaCameroonian born, Violeta Sofia is a Photographer and Artist based in London.
