Reducing Restrictive Practices: Understanding Key Intervention Components

John is Chair of Mental Health Nursing in the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds. He is a Non-executive Director at Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and sits on the Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Senate. John's research focuses on reducing coercion and restrictive practices, patient and professional safety in mental health services and effective and therapeutic mental healthcare. He is Principal Investigator for the COMPARE study and the forthcoming CONTRAST.

Professor John Baker, University of Leeds

At this event we will present our findings from <A HREF="https://mentalhealthresearchinleeds.wordpress.com/compare/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">COMPARE: Establishing components of programmes to reduce restrictive practices: an evidence synthesis</A>. We have identified and mapped over 100 interventions that have been implemented in various adult mental health settings across the world. A free, interactive directory will be made available following this event. Using a specially designed taxonomy, we were able to discern between the active components of a substantial proportion of these interventions. Consequently, for the first time, we will be able to indicate which intervention components have the most (or least) potential to reduce restrictive practices. 
 
We will also introduce a new study that builds on and extends this work: <A HREF="https://mentalhealthresearchinleeds.wordpress.com/contrast/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CONTRAST: Establishing components of interventions to reduce restrictive practices with children and young people: an evidence synthesis</A>. Here, we will seek to identify interventions to reduce restrictive practices with children in a range of residential settings.

Yes, although to ensure that a balance of professionals (academics and practitioners), service users and carers and a range of organisations have the opportunity to attend, we would ask that tickets are only transferred within the same organisation and that no service user or carer tickets are reallocated to professionals.
