Event description
This session proposes making reflective books as a solution to research dilemmas

About this event

When in the midst of an experience connected to your research, it can be hard to find a good way to keep track of and reflect on it, both in general and in the context of your research project. ‘Normal’ note-taking often doesn’t do conference attendances or museum visits justice, while video or audio recording often collects an overwhelming amount of data. This session proposes making reflective books as a solution. Working through the visual can also be a helpful, alternative and enjoyable form of expression. It can also provide a visual narrative of a stage in a research study. In the morning, we will explore ‘reflective books’ and discuss their advantages, as well as introducing useful strategies to try out, such as collage, mark-making and playing with typography. After some independent time to put these strategies into practice, we’ll reconvene for a sharing and discussion session in the afternoon. You do NOT need to be artistic, the techniques you will learn can be accessed by all! We will send out a list of suggested materials before the session – but everything you’ll need should be things you already have, so no specialist equipment will be required.
