Event description

Description

The focus of this workshop is the use of reflective practice for library and information practitioners with a focus on information literacy training. The day will consist of a presentation of basic theories and definitions, so that the practices that are learnt and developed throughout the day are grounded in research. Participants will be exposed to a range of tools and techniques that can be applied in the personally and in the workplace, and will cover reflective thinking, reflective discussion, reflective writing, and practice. After considering these generic aspects of reflection participants will then focus more specifically on reflection for learning, and information literacy practice. A number of case studies will be presented, and participants will have the opportunity to draw on their own experiences in the work place. The day will be interactive, and participants are expected to engage in discussion, and a number of individual, and group exercises.

No prior knowledge is required. No reading is required prior to the workshop.

Participants will be provided with a work pack on the day, a copy of all the slides, and a short reading list for those who wish to explore the topic further.

Trainer

Barbara Sen is a former Senior Lecturer at the Information School, the University of Sheffield, and is currently an External Examiner at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Her main areas of interest are the strategic management of information services, and continuing professional development including the use of reflective practice to support learning. Prior to working in Higher Education Barbara worked in a number of sectors including health, business, and academic libraries. As a library manager in the health sector, she saw the difference that a professional librarian could make especially in the areas of information literacy support where the impact could be seen immediately, and the strategic management of services which could often be long term and wide reaching.. It was her experiences as a practitioner teaching information literacy that gave her the most job satisfaction, and encouraged her to develop her teaching skills and enter Academia.

She is keen to encourage students and practitioners, with their own professional development, and self management, so that they can progress their careers, and exploit the opportunities that are available to them. Activities to support personal and professional development are always integrated into teaching and training including her work on reflective practice. Her research on reflection, and other topics has been disseminated in workshops, academic journals, and at international conferences. Her models on reflective practice have been adopted, adapted and applied in different professions and countries throughout the world.
