Event description

Description

With Robin Fleming (Boston College)

This lecture explores the ways not very fancy communities both before and after Rome dealt with their dead babies and thinks through the meaning of the attitudes and practices surrounding them.

The infant dead can help us pinpoint some of the profound transformations in the lived experience and thought worlds of people in Britain first under and then after Rome. The changing treatment of little corpses hints at broad cultural and cosmological shifts that allow us to sidestep the kinds of discussions that usually dominate historical treatments of the transition between Roman and early medieval in Britain, discussions that tend to coagulate around questions of high politics and the great movement of peoples.
