TheUKRI Cloud Working GroupandThe Cloud for Research Special Interest Groupexist to help researchers and technical specialists using cloud computing technologies and services to share knowledge and expertise. The Working Group and The Cloud-SIG is supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

UKRI Cloud Working Group

The RCUK Cloud Working Group are hosting their 3rd annual workshop to bring together researchers and technical specialists to share expertise in the application of cloud computing technology for the research community. The meeting will include presentations from a range of research domains including particle physics, astronomy, the environmental sciences, medical research and bioinformatics.
This workshop will focus on key areas to address in order for the potential of cloud computing for research to be fully realised:

Tackling technical challenges around the use of cloud: for example, porting legacy workloads, scenarios for hybrid cloud, moving large data volumes, use of object storage vs. POSIX file systems.
</LI>
<LI>
Cloud as enabler for new and novel applications: e.g. use of public cloud toolkits and services around Machine Learning, AI, use of FPGAs and GPU based systems, applications related to Internet of Things and Edge Computing
</LI>
<LI>
Perspectives from European and international collaborations and research programmes
</LI>
<LI>
Policy, legal, regulatory and ethical issues, models for funding - case studies for managing sensitive or personal data in the cloud
</LI>
<LI>
Addressing the skills gap: how to educate researchers in how to best take advantage of cloud; DevOps and ResOps
</LI>
</UL>

The workshop will consist of a series of presentations from invited speakers along with the opportunity to meet and network with other members of the research community. It will include talks from representatives from research organisations, public cloud providers and the OpenStack community.   These include AWS, Google, Microsoft, UKCloud, Jisc, CERN, EMBL-EBI, EGI, OpenStack Foundation, Turing Institute.
<H2>Invitation for abstracts</H2>
As part of the workshop registration we would like to invite you to make a submission.  This could be a presentation, lightning talk or a poster.   We are particularly interested to hear about work related to the topic areas list above.
In addition, we will be planning a session for groups to work together on short targeted technical activities, to give demos or network and share ideas.  If you're interested, you should bring along your own laptop.  Dedicated wired Internet access will be available at the venue specifically for this session.
We are keen to hear from you about specific examples of how the application of cloud computing technology or a cloud service model has directly benefited you in achieving your research goals.  If you have a really exciting or novel thing you want to share please tell us about it on your registration!
