Research into Sensitive Topics  (RIST) Workshop

Throughout its life, BU has developed a strong reputation for offering a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate education, research and enterprise. Inspired by a clear vision for the future we continue to develop new initiatives and programmes, to realise the potential of staff and students alike.

This free workshop sets out to explore the impact of undertaking sensitive or challenging research on researchers. Some projects, particularly with sensitive topics and/or seldom heard groups, expose researchers to emotionally disturbing situations throughout data collection, which can be psychologically challenging. Researchers may also face challenges linked to trying to honour marginalised voices through the accurate and “truthful” representation of voice, whilst dealing with the power disparities inherent in the researcher and researched relationship. This workshop will present the preliminary findings from a Research into Sensitive Topics project (RIST) and is open to those interested in such areas of research to explore best practice and provide a networking event on which to build future research.
