Research Network: Luxury 

Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) is an evolving, radical visual arts organisation dedicated to developing an artistic programme that reflects on the social and political impact of globalisation.With the Stuart Hall Library acting as a critical and creative hub for our work, we collaborate with artists, curators, researchers and cultural producers to challenge conventional notions of diversity and difference. We engage a wide audience, particularly young people, in discourse and debate on issues surrounding the politics of race, class and gender.Through our programme we work predominantly with British-born and British-based visual artists of African and Asian descent supporting them at different stages in their careers. We offer residencies, commission new work and promote existing practices enabling artistic ambition and development.

In this presentation, collective Fresh New Anxieties will discuss their practice of designing sustainable self-care and professional frameworks in relations to chronic health conditions, disability and neurodiversity. They will also examine how austerity and accompanying micro-aggressions operate within creative contexts.
Fresh New Anxieties
Meeting weekly at each other’s homes, Fresh New Anxieties try to create a community of care, centring collectivity and an empathetic but critical environment allowing people to speak openly about their struggles and self-doubt. This supports them to develop methodologies of radical self-care, unpicking ingrained ideas about their own value based on productivity and capacity for labour. All this as resistance to institutional structures which systematically contribute to people's disempowerment and alienation, adding to an epidemic of poor mental and physical health.
