RSC: Digital Skills for Research Technical Staff

Over the course of these two weeks, we will delve into the role of technical staff at UK universities, career pathways, and recognition of technical staff contributions to research.

<p>The <a href="https://carpentries-incubator.github.io/fair-research-software/" title="https://carpentries-incubator.github.io/fair-research-software/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">FAIR Research Software course</a> (delivered over 4 half-days from 26-29 November 2024, 09:00 - 13:00 UTC) will teach the tools and practices for producing and sharing quality, sustainable and <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-022-01710-x" title="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-022-01710-x" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) research software</a> to support open and reproducible research.</p><p><br></p><h4>Audience</h4><p>Post-graduate students or early career researchers who are starting their research projects, have foundational knowledge of Python, version control and using software tools from command line shell, and want to develop software to support their research using established best practices</p><p>Researchers or scientists who had foundational software training before but wish to refresh, reinforce or improve their skills and practices in the wider context of FAIR research and sharing and writing software for open and reproducible research</p><p><br></p><h4>Pre-requisites</h4><p>Before joining this training, participants must have foundational knowledge of Python used to write scientific code, version control system Git and code sharing platform GitHub and a command line (shell) tool to be able to understand code examples used in the course.</p><p><br></p><h4>Workshop details</h4><p>Below you can find important information about the workshop:</p><ul><li><a href="https://softwaresaved.github.io/2024-11-26-fair-software/" title="https://softwaresaved.github.io/2024-11-26-fair-software/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Workshop website</a> with course details and tentative schedule</li></ul><ul><li>Please make sure to fill in <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc65v4WQ0fRPpx7ftQLWfowzN3wDozY4WHLGpiwXQZeWjUJLQ/viewform" title="" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">pre-workshop survey</a> before coming to the workshop</li></ul><ul><li>Please make sure that you have all the <a href="https://carpentries-incubator.github.io/fair-research-software/#setup" title="https://carpentries-incubator.github.io/fair-research-software/#setup" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">required software</a> installed before coming to the workshop.</li></ul><p>We will hold an online drop-in pre-workshop setup session on Monday 25 November between 11:00 - 13:00 to check your installation and help with any issues - registered participants will receive a Zoom link to join. Please make sure to attend this session to have your setup checked even if you have installed all the required software yourself.</p><p><br></p><h3>About the Research Software Camp: Digital Skills for Research Technical Staff</h3><p>This iteration of the Research Software Camps will run for two weeks from 18th to 27th November 2024. We will focus on introducing and developing research software skills that research technical staff might use as part of their day-to-day jobs.</p><p>The Software Sustainability Institute runs free online Research Software Camps focussing on introducing and exploring a topic around research software, thus starting discussions among various research communities.</p><p><br></p>
