Every day, thousands of the children and young people who live here are inspired by the city’s culture to unleash their own creative side. They have the chance to develop their skills, talents and passions, becoming people who can thrive in a challenging, changing world and boost our wider society.But there are also thousands of young people who miss out on London’s creative opportunities. Barriers of inequality or simple lack of support stop young people from reaching their creative potential, which has knock-on effects for their chances of personal fulfilment and success in later life.What is the vision of A New Direction?Inequality is not set in stone; we can make London into a city with equal opportunities to engage with culture and be creative for all young people and children. This is our vision.We are working towards a society where all children and young people can thrive through developing their creativity.What does A New Direction do?We work directly with the organisations at the front line: schools, cultural venues, local authorities and businesses. We unite those organisations to campaign for better policies that serve children and young people. We organise joint events and projects to reach a broader audience. We connect young people to mentors, work experience and inspiration.Who does A New Direction help?Children and young people in London and through helping them, wider society.

A New Direction

An opportunity for those working within learning teams in London’s cultural sector to connect, share practice, and develop new ideas.

Join us for a workshop exploring digital collaboration in the cultural learning landscape. For our second digital practice session, we will be joined by Varjack-Lowry, who will share their practice and invite participants to consider how we can create digital learning spaces that are conducive to creativity, learning and collaboration. This workshop will explore shifting and adapting collaborative and social practice in the wake of social distancing, and amid the sector’s return to blended online and in-person learning work. The workshop will help participants consider how to make the most of digital interfaces while also developing practical ways to imbue digital ‘spaces’ with creativity, fun and shared values. Varjack-Lowry have adapted their collaborative practice in the wake of COVID-19 and have successfully combined different methodologies to engage with participants, organisations and each other from afar. This workshop will offer ideas, activities and tools to develop participants’ own creative practice to enable them to collaborate effectively, remotely. Varjack-Lowry is a collaboration between artists <a href="http://www.paulavarjack.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Paula Varjack</a> and <a href="https://www.chuckbluelowry.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Chuck Blue Lowry </a>that aims to develop a distinctive visual, theatrical and participatory practice; merging skills derived from careers in filmmaking, theatre-making and participation. Varjack works in video, performance, theatre, spoken word and participation, and Lowry is an artist and filmmaker specialising in art as social practice, particularly intergenerational creativity<h3>Attendee requirements</h3>Please note that this will be an on-camera, participatory event where each attendee’s input will be valued and respected. We look forward to seeing you there!<h3>Reset Culture Sector</h3>In Autumn 2020, A New Direction launched <a href="https://anewdirection.org.uk/what-we-do/reset" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Reset</a> – our programme of support in response to the pandemic, aimed at fostering resilience and adaptation within the sector as we work together through the impacts of COVID-19.Our Reset events provide those working in cultural learning teams with an opportunity to reflect on their practice and have conversations with others across the field.
