Resisting Mediocrity: The Cancellation of Critical Thinking at the University of LeicesterIn 2021, bosses at University of Leicester, led by Gary Dixon, chair of Council, and vice-chancellor Nishan Canagarajah, made redundant numerous scholars in what was simultaneously an attack on academic freedom and trade union organisation. They called their programme Shaping for Excellence. It resulted in over 200 employees exiting the university.Three years on, some of those dismissed have published Shaping for Mediocrity, their account of the struggle to resist redundancy and to remake the university.The book’s authors will be joined by more recent employees of the university, who will recount what’s happened since, and other guests who will discuss a recent campaign to oust a vice-chancellor, and how we might survive mediocre institutions.Date: 24 OctoberTime: 7–9pmLocation: The Globe, 43 Silver Street, Leicester LE1 5EU
