Event description

Description

Cloud computing has become a very popular paradigm in computing in general and increasingly in the more demanding field of scientific computing. The RCUK Cloud Working Group (https://cloud.ac.uk/) has over the last 2 years initiated a series of community events and discussions to help researchers access and exploit cloud computing for their work. One early realisation is the need for practical advice as to how build an application that can be deployed across multiple clouds.

This workshop will provide some background to cloud computing and practical experience in building, deploying and running applications in cloud platforms - ResOps (Research Operations). Using examples drawn from EMBL-EBI’s experiences in the life-sciences, but using tools and technologies that are cross-platform and cross-domain, attendees will come away with a knowledge as to the practical aspects of deploying across different clouds and the design considerations around porting applications to a cloud.

Attendees should be comfortable with technical scientific computing concepts and operating in and administering a linux environment (i.e. ssh, shell scripts, etc) and will learn about using DevOps technologies (e.g. Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, Docker) to deploy onto OpenStack.
