Retracing the Library

The  'Creative Posthumanism' project explores creative expressions of critical posthumanism in Hampshire and the West Midlands. It aims to establish a network of thinkers and creatives in these areas who are working towards similar goals, and to explore definitions of posthumanism in arts practice. This event is also sponsored by the Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities (SIAH). SIAH supports, promotes and develops arts and humanities led-research in order to expand the scale of what we can achieve. SIAH will enable scholars to use the critical, creative and theoretical approaches of the Arts and Humanities to lead on large and ambitious projects.

Creative Posthumanism

Join us for a creative workshop where you will become part of the strange ebb and flow of Winchester School of Art Library!

Winchester School of Art Library

Over the course of two hours, you will trace the library’s journey from the overflow shelves at its current location, to the gallery space it was rescued from during the flood of 1999, to the moated glass Rotunda where it began life in 1965. In each space you will be asked to remake and reimagine the library in a way that is meaningful to you. By the end of the workshop we will have created a new library collection together, which will remain on display for the duration of the festival, and will then be commemorated in WSA’s archives. She sees the artists’ book as a social medium for creating situations where exchange with others is founded on the willingness to share rather than on reciprocal obligation. Her work considers how the relational and social capacities of the artists’ book extend our thinking around authorship and relationality in social art practice. Recently, Noriko has been busy thinking of ways to keep the book &#x27;open&#x27; and in movement.Amy Butt is a practising architect and a lecturer in architecture at the University of Reading with a specialisation in architectural representation and communication. Her research explores the way the fictional worlds we construct influence and reflect the world we inhabit, writing about utopian thought and the imaginary in architecture through science fiction literature and film. In her teaching, she explores the role of narrative and empathetic engagement in design using science fiction literature to provide a critical point of reflection on cities we currently inhabit as well as future worlds currently under construction. She is one of co-founders of the architectural design collective Involve.Megen de Bruin-Molé is a Lecturer in Digital Media Practice with the University of Southampton. She specialises in ‘monstrous’ historical fiction, adaptation, and contemporary remix culture, and she is currently interested in the digital afterlives and appropriations of historical archives and ephemera. She is also an editor of the Genealogy of the Posthuman, an Open Access initiative curated by the Critical Posthumanism Network. Its collections include books, e-books, print and electronic journals, graphic novels, zines, artists&#x27; films and archives. It also holds an extensive collection of artists&#x27; books and Visionaires. Since 1999, it has been home to the Knitting Reference Library and since 2008, it has organized the bi-annual knitting conference In the Loop.This event is part of the Being Human festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 10–19 November 2022.
