Rights in Practice

Professor Stuart Hall BuildingLondon, England
Wednesday, Jan 28 from 4 pm to 6 pm GMT
Overview

Join us to explore challenges to human rights in the UK and how academics and practitioners collaborate to promote rights and social justice

Join us for an engaging event that explores the state of human rights practice in the UK, the challenges facing the sector, and how academia and practitioners can work together to promote rights and social justice.

Human rights work in the UK is facing unprecedented challenges, from threats to the right to protest and freedom of expression, to growing hostility towards refugees and migrants, and the erosion of legal protections that safeguard human rights. Rights in Practice brings together leading practitioners from the organisations including Liberty, Freedom from Torture, Article 19, and Counterpoints Arts to discuss how the sector navigates this volatile political landscape in the UK.

Human rights study at Goldsmiths engages with these challenges through both critical sociological and legal human rights research and practice. The event will showcase our human rights initiatives across Sociology and Law, including the MA in Human Rights, Culture and Social Justice, the LLM in Human Rights, our practice-based modules as well as new law clinics.

The event will also mark the launch the Human Rights Law and Policy Clinic, which will create further opportunities for collaboration between academia and the sector and open pathways for students aspiring to work in the field of human rights.

Join us to hear from leading organisations in the UK, network, and explore how we can work together to strengthen the link between human rights theory and practice.

Speakers:

Opening remarks: Yeşim Yaprak Yıldız & Marta Minetti

Almir Koldzic, Director, Counterpoints Arts

David Diaz-Jogeix, Senior Director of Programmes, Article 19

Ruth Ehrlich, Head of Policy & Campaigns, Liberty

Sile Reynolds, Head of Asylum Advocacy, Freedom from Torture

The event will be followed by a reception.
