Roadmap for JSON in PostgreSQL: What’s Next?

However, it's not the end of "NoSQL in PostgreSQL" story - in the upcoming PostgreSQL releases, a lot more features and enhancements will become available. Many of them will be related to further work on JSON.JSONB in PostgreSQL is one of the main attractions for modern app developers, no matter what some RDBMS purists are thinking. The implementation of SQL/JSON standard will become an integral part of PG12 , PG13 and PG14 releases, which is great. Introducing one unified JSON data type instead of the historic two is super important. Currently we have textual and binary (better) JSON. The latter, called JSONB, is actually the most usable and popular data type. As the specification for JSON data type will be added to the upcoming edition of SQL standard, we have to decide on a generic JSON in Postgres, combining the best features of both JSON &amp; JSONB.We have worked a lot on making non-atomic data types 'first-class citizens' in PostgreSQL, developed new indexing access methods for JSON documents, but now it's time for even more new features and even higher performance. Taking advantage of PostgreSQL's extensibility, it's natural to add support for user's data types and operators to JSONPATH, make use of JSONPATH to index JSON data, optimize access to specific key-value pairs for large JSON documents, and so on. Our main goal and key task is to ensure interoperability for environments with multiple databases while keeping great performance and compliance with the latest SQL standard.At this webinar, we'll tackle the history of JSON support in PostgreSQL, cover some of the well-known and less-known features and common use cases, and, most importantly, have a look at the roadmap for JSON support in PostgreSQL. Audience: Database Developers, Software Engineers, Application Software Developers, Web Developers.Oleg Bartunov Speaker Bio:Oleg Bartunov has been involved in PostgreSQL development since 1996 (he introduced locale support). He is a major developer and a member of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group. Together with his colleague Teodor Sigaev he developed infrastructure for implementing user-define index access methods GiST, GIN and SP-GiST, built-in full-text search facilities in PostgreSQL (formerly known as tsearch2) and a number of popular extensions like intarray, ltree, hstore, pg_trgm, jsquery and rum access method. His latest contributions are jsonb and implementation of SQL/JSON.Oleg graduated from the Astronomy department of the Physics department at Lomonosov's Moscow State University. As a researcher, he extensively used PostgreSQL in his scientific work and many other projects. In 2015, Oleg co-founded Postgres Professional, a company specializing in database development, 24x7 support, and expert consulting services for PostgreSQL. Since then Postgres Professional (aka Postgres Pro) has grown into a midsize business with 70+ staff members onboard (90% technical roles, tens of PostgreSQL committers and contributors).
