About this event

Who is this class for?

To join our Super Sunday Skills class, we suggest you can already skate forwards and fall safely. If you have never attended our Level 1 class, or have no skate experience, you are still welcome to join, however, please note we are no longer offering support for Level 1 skaters in this session.

Skate hire (including protective pads) available - please ensure you purchase Entry + Skate hire ticket for each person requiring skates.

Please note:  The coaching in this class will end up to 10 minutes before the session end to allow for the removal of skates and protection within the session time.

What will we learn?

We will separate our groups by confidence and experience, with different groups having different coaches.

This month, we are focussing on skating backwards, transitions and stopping. We will have already covered two of these skills in our Sunday classes at The Skate Sanctuary - this is an opportunity to try these skills at higher speeds within a larger space and with more people.

Should you feel you have joined the wrong group, please move to the group that best meets your needs.

Why have we changed our session structure?

When we opened The Skate Sanctuary, we always wanted it to be our main space for teaching. That can only happen if we move more of our classes there each week. The Super Sunday Skills Session is an opportunity to work on moving within a much busier space - much more like a roller skate space you may encounter in 'the wild' so that you are equipped with the skills and confidence to skate in a space that supports all levels. As this is a structured class, it is not really like 'the wild', however, we know that it can be un-nerving to move within a space where there are skaters of very different levels. You may also not realise what is possible on roller skates and by seeing what is possible, it can inspire you to achieve more.

Finally, we want to build connections with the skaters in our skate community - we have the privilege of getting to know you as you progress and watch you develop (nothing makes us happier!) into the confident skaters we know you can be. We also want to give you the opportunity to get to know each other. Making friends as adults is HARD. Finding a space that actively promotes and facilitates you meeting new people is even harder. We know that friendship offers support and that skaters truly understand the mental and emotional journey - so please take the opportunity to chat with other people in the room you don't already know. You may be surprised by how many people come by themselves! We deliberately want a busier space that will support the development of these connections. Our challenge is always to speak to one person you don't already know.

Remember: Roller skate skills can take months to develop, depending on the skill you want to learn. We are not able to include all skills every week - skaters attend these sessions until they feel confident to progress to our skills workshops.  If you're not sure, please speak to a member of the coach team at class.

What size hire skates do I need?

We recommend you ask for your regular shoe size.  If you try skates on and they're not right for you, we are happy to swap them. Our skate hire is available in full sizes only, from UK 3 - UK 15. You no longer need to book a specific ticket to tell us what size you require.

I have a Skate Pass, do I still need to book?

Yes, please still book your spot for this class and have your digital Skate Pass ready to show at check-in.  Please remember that if you are not able to make it, our cancellation policy does still apply.

Can I bring my own refreshments?

Yes of course.  We want to keep this skate space alcohol free, so ask you do not bring alcohol to consume on the premises, including the car park. If you bring your own water bottle, we are able to refill this for you for free.  We also have a small selection of soft drinks for sale.  Should you spill your drink, please let a marshall know straight away.  Please make sure you are not eating and drinking while you skate, that includes chewing gum.

I wear inline skates, can I come?

Yup. We welcome all wheely-booted folks.

I don't identify as a girl, can I come?

Absolutely!  The Skate Sanctuary was founded and is run by women, with the support of our fantastic volunteer team, to provide better access to roller skating for all genders and identities, especially marginalised folks.

Can I collect my shop order?

You absolutely can, providing you have made the order with sufficient time for the team to plan this.  You can contact the shop directly on +44 7479 430404 .
