RoR Registry and Hub Chatter Sessions

RoR Registry and Hub Chatter sessions have been running since January 2022. The sessions are online, one hour long in a semi-structured fashion where presenter(s) lead a discussion on a topic of interest to the research on research community.

Please join us on the 25 July 2022 at 14.00 (BST)  for a presentation led by Simon Hettrick.   Does research assessment reflect what really happens in academia? Non-traditional careers and The hidden REF   Professor Simon Hettrick is Deputy Director of the Software Sustainability Institute and a Director of the Southampton Research Software Group*.He works with stakeholders from across the research community to develop policies that support research software, the people who develop that software and the researchers who rely on it. Simon's research focuses on the use of software in the research community with the aim of understanding practices and demographics. In this role, he conducted the first study of software reliance in academia.Simon is a passionate advocate for Research Software Engineers. He orchestrated a campaign to gain recognition for this community, which has grown from a handful of people in 2013 to a substantial international community numbering in the thousands. He was the founding chair of the UK's Association of Research Software Engineers and was a founding Trustee of the Society of Research Software Engineering and its Treasurer. Simon is the Chair of The hidden REF (https://hidden-ref.org/): a national competition that looks to recognise all research outputs and every role that makes research possible. In this role, Simon campaigns for a broader interpretation of how people can contribute to the conduct of research. *The Southampton Research Software Group (https://rsgsoton.net/) is based at the University of Southampton. The group makes research software engineering expertise available to researchers across the University, provides training in software engineering and encourages collaboration and the sharing of knowledge between researchers who rely on software.Please forward on to colleagues who you think would be interested.   A Zoom link to join the session will be sent closer to the date.  This session will be recorded.

Here are the highlights from the session: 
•	Research assessment is necessary: accountability of public funds 
•	Current research assessment exercises do not include a formal system to recognise the diversity of research outputs, especially those from hidden roles in research (e.g. research software engineers, research managers, laboratory technicians, librarians, etc.) 
•	Hidden REF competition 2021 focused on identifying and recognising the many different contributions to research 
•	Key: the contribution required visibility and significance, i.e., how it enabled/supported research impact. No evidence from publications was accepted. 
•	Response: 120 submissions from at least 44 organisations provided evidence of support from the sector to ensure that research assessment exercises recognise the people who do the research and who make doing research possible

Our next session will be taking place on 23 November 2022 10am – 11am (GMT) and the title of the session is: 
Learning from qualitative research on research:  addressing the mismatch between where trials recruit and where populations with the most disease live 
Presented by Sue Ziebland Professor of Medical Sociology and Co-Director of the Medical Sociology and Health Experiences Research Group University of Oxford.
