Merrivale Model Village

one-twelfth is a series of 12 annual 1:12 scale public art commissions organised by originalprojects;. Each one will be sited at Merrivale Model Village for one season then sited at a public location within the Borough of Great Yarmouth, creating a trail of miniature artworks exploring ideas of scale, transformation and relationship to place.Really bad thing seen from a different perspective (The pet giraffe of the thief that stole a Barbara Hepworth sculpture from Dulwich Park) by Ryan Gander is the inaugural one-twelfth public art commission. Gander has created a version of a giraffe that was first made in plasticine by his daughter whilst being told the story of the theft of a work by Barbara Hepworth from Dulwich Park (she imagined the thief would have had a pet giraffe to help carry the sculpture).As part of a previous project, an imagined invisible alliteration of the sculpture was sited at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Belgium, the evidence of which manifests itself through a visualisation and concrete foundations, stripped bare. The work made for Great Yarmouth is a 1:12 scale version of the work that was never produced, conjuring para-fictional realities and travelling across scales and locations.Will Self was commissioned to produce a text to accompany the artwork, and conducted an interview with the giraffe. They discussed ideas of transformation, scale, art, and the ridiculousness of interviewing a plasticine giraffe.Postcards showing the work from the viewpoints of residents of, and visitors to, Merrivale Model Village, as well as the text by Will Self, will be available, along with limited edition artworks produced by Little Gem Modelers.Ryan Gander has established an international reputation through artworks that materialise in many different forms – from sculpture to film, writing, graphic design, installation, performance and more besides. Will Self is an author, journalist and contemporary commentator.
