Safe Spaces? Location Data and Human Migration

The Benchmark Initiative, delivered by Geovation, supported by the Omidyar Network, is an exploration of the ethical issues raised by the proliferation of location data, and ways that public interests can be protected while supporting innovation.The Benchmark lecture series combines keynote lectures, fireside conversations and panel discussions on the ethical considerations raised by our use of location data. Our speakers are global leaders, each with a unique insight into the growth of location data and its ethical application. They will discuss topics ranging from privacy and security challenges through to the unintended consequences of geospatial innovation and what the future holds for the industry.

Data about people migrating to escape persecution and natural events can be used to help them, or to control them. Maria Farrell, writer and speaker about technology and the future, leads an expert panel to discuss how location data can be used to help people in need, and how these approaches are being adapted to responding to the pandemic.
