Event description
A free exhibition celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Saltaire becoming a World Heritage site.

About this event

Celebrate Saltaire World Heritage Site's 20th anniversary at a wonderful exhibition supported by knowledegable historians.

Through text and images, the exhibition will tell you about Titus Salt, the founder of the village, and James Roberts, one of his successors as the owner of the mighty Salt's Mill. Without Roberts, the founder's legacy could easily have been lost.

We'll show you unique artefacts and answer your questions. We'll also introduce you to the two brilliant industrial history sites that were given global recognition alongside Saltaire: New Lanark in Scotland and Derwent Valley in Derbyshire. Robert Owen? Richard Arkwright? Yes: the big names at those World Heritage sites.

And your exhibition concludes with a beautiful show of photographs on the theme 'International Saltaire'.

FAQs

How do I get to Salts Mill?

Saltaire is 4 miles north of Bradford, 20 minutes from the M606 and the motorway network. Follow the brown road signs from the motorway. Saltaire train station is just across the road from the mill. It's 20 minutes from Leeds or Bradford.

The address of the boardroom at Salts Mill is Victoria Road, Saltaire BD18 3LF but if you are driving, put BD17 7EF into your satnav to go to the mill's very big FREE car park. When your satnav says you've reached your destination, keep going along Salts Mill Road following the brown signs - you'll pass a big red brick chimney on your left as you cross the canal and The Waterfront, an office building, on your right. Then you'll see the mill in front of you at the end of the road. Proceed through the gate into the FREE Salts visitors car park which is on the right.

A helpful map to a nearby destination has public transport info. It can be found at https://www.saltairecollection.org/wp-content/uploads/The-Saltaire-Collection-location-and-parking.pdf

It's a big place Salts Mill. Where's the boardroom?

See image of the mill below. Marked with a yellow circle, the boardroom is near the bottom of Victoria Road, almost directly opposite the church. If you come by rail , when you exit the station just walk a few yards downhill , walk into the mill complex on your right, immediately turn left and the boardroom is in front of you. Much the same if you come on foot or by bike.

If you come by car to the FREE car park (at BD17 7EF, see above), the boardroom is on the opposite side of the Mill.

What about people with disabilities?

We welcome folk with disabilities and because we're restricting ticket numbers, we're confident we'll be able to address a wide range of issues.

Access to the boardroom is up a small number of steep steps so if you have mobility problems, we’ve arranged a flat route. Follow the signs or go to the security lodge and ask for help. If you have a disability and would like help, please contact us at historyclub@saltairevillage.info with your telephone number. We'll respond asap.

Disabled and coming by car? Put BD17 7EF into your satnav. Follow the BD17 7EF directions above but don’t park in the very big car park. Instead, pass the 'Visitors Parking' sign and continue past the mill chimney. You will see a glass canopy with disabled parking spaces. Level access to the boardroom is through the tunnel opposite these parking spaces. Turn left after going through the tunnel , walk along to the security lodge (on your left) and ask for directions. For additional information or help please call 01274 531163 during mill opening hours.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

No. Children are welcome if supervised by a responsible adult.

Who's responsible for this event?

Saltaire: Foundation and Legacy is a collaboration between the Saltaire Collection, Saltaire Inspired and Saltaire History Club - and the New Lanark and Derwent Valley World Heritage Sites. We're pleased to acknowledge financial support from Bradford Metropolitan District Council and Shipley Town Council.
