ScottishAssociation ofMinorityEthnicEducatorsBuilding Bridges in EducationProviding a Forum for professional dialogue amongst Minority Ethnic EducatorsSAMEE was formed in 2011 when a small group of ethnic minority teachers and lecturers recognised the need to work with the local community to improve the quality of the support mechanisms in place for teachers who are not necessarily native English speakers. The group on a voluntary capacity will be aiming to provide a forum for all Educators in Scotland who see themselves as a minority. These might include people from settled minority ethnic communities in Scotland, migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers.SAMEE aims to overcome barriers which may otherwise create distance within communities by actively promoting religious and racial harmony. The group will provide a forum for professional dialogue amongst educators, and it will support the advancement of Education by assisting minority ethnic parents and carers with the opportunity to access and discuss the Scottish Curriculum.It builds on the principles of ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ in that:‘Parents who take on a supportive role in their child’s learning make a difference in improving achievement and behaviour. The active involvement of parents in the life of the school can help promote a learning community in which pupils can engage positively with school staff and their peers’.What makes SAMEE unique is that there is no other organisation like it in Scotland, in the work it will be undertaking to promote equality and diversity through dialogue and engagement with external agencies in partnership work.SAMEE provides a consultative and supportive approach to Local Authorities and Educational Establishments in matters which at times may be seen to be sensitive anddifficult to address. The work of SAMEE will without doubt strengthen the Scottish Education system further by providing training for all Educators and parents/carers hence building positive steps towards empowering and breaking down culturally sensitive barriers.

The Scottish Black and Minority Ethnic Mentoring Network, is being launched by SAMEE in partnership with the GTCS. This follows the recommendations of the national report on ‘Teaching in a Diverse Scotland: Increasing and Retaining Minority Ethnic Teachers’ which was published in November 2018. Seventeen recommendations were made and approved by Scottish Government. Recommendations 14 and 15 are of particular relevance to local authorities and BME teachers:
<H4>14 - Local authorities should recognise and support aspiring minority ethnic teachers and encourage them to apply for promotion both within schools and across the wider education service. As part of this local authorities should examine how racism, institutional racism, bias (conscious or unconscious), and lack of awareness act as blocks to the promotion of BME teachers. This should be done in partnership with BME teachers who can inform such an exercise.</H4>
<H4>15. A national mentoring network for minority ethnic staff should be established by March 2019. This network should be developed and led by the GTCS, working in partnership with BME teachers and relevant groups who have experience in this area. The mentoring process should include the ability to spend time in another school or authority to shadow a promoted member of staff.</H4>
In an effort to address the lack of ethnic diversity in the teaching profession, this programme is essential for sustained and meaningful progress in race equality in Scottish education. We are delighted that this national network is being launched on Friday 29th November 2019 at 2pm in Glasgow City Chambers. This provides an exciting opportunity for us to collectively improve the diversity of the teaching workforce to better reflect the communities we serve. The mentoring network will encourage participants to recognise and develop their skills and will include a range of valuable professional learning opportunities.
