ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

WHAT IS IT? A unique workshop challenging singers to develop their existing acting skills and deepen their understanding of the relationship between the crafts of acting and singing.

HOW WILL IT WORK? We will spend the morning working on pre-prepared monologues, creating emotion, energy, rhythm, character and on-stage relationships by relying on acting ability alone, without the aid or interference of music; in the afternoon we will apply this learning to participants' own choice of aria, exploring what happens when we add music back in. **PLEASE NOTE: it is recommended that participants book well in advance of this session, to allow preparation time for their chosen monologue and arias.

WHAT WILL YOU GET OUT OF IT? Singers will go away with a practical appreciation for the actor's craft, and how this can inform and enhance their own work, enriching what they have to offer on stage and in the rehearsal room. Participants will also receive resources to help them continue to develop their understanding of the fundamentals of acting, and appreciation of the art of theatre.

TUTOR Laura Attridge (you can read our Q&A with Laura from earlier this year here)
Laura Attridge is a dynamic maker of opera and theatre with a passion for collaborative creative work and an artistic vision which aims to balance integrity and innovation. She founded And So Forth in 2015 with the aim of providing opportunities for exceptional emerging artists to develop their craft. Laura directed and co-wrote ASF’s inaugural production, Damsel/Wife/Witch, a piece challenging contemporary gender expectations through fairy tale, for two actors and a mezzo-soprano; other work with the company has included the hosting of Q&As with established artists, and the curation of this series of development workshops for performers.

Laura has directed new pieces of theatre at venues including the Southwark Playhouse, Arts Theatre, Tristan Bates Theatre, Camden People’s Theatre and Etcetera Theatre. Her opera direction to date includes two France/UK tours for Opera Loki (Così fan tutte, 2016; La Bohème, 2015), and this autumn she joins Hampstead Garden Opera as director of their production of Jonathan Dove’s The Enchanted Pig at Jacksons Lane. Laura has been an assistant director for companies such as English Touring Opera, Opera Holland Park, Blackheath Halls Opera, British Youth Opera and the Royal Academy of Music, as well as Associate Director for W11 Opera. This summer she has been staff director for the revival of Tom Cairns’ elegant production of La Traviata at Glyndebourne.

With her other hat on, Laura is also a successful librettist and poet. You can find out more at www.lauraattridge.com.
