Scything Workshop
Develop your scything skills in this workshop for beginners and improvers with scything instructor John Grundy at Drygrange Woodland
Join us for a full‑day, hands‑on scything workshop. This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to mow effectively and comfortably with a scythe.
What the Day Covers
- Anatomy of the scythe
- Setting up the scythe
- Mowing techniques
- Blade honing
- Meadow management
- Peening the blade
- Year‑round maintenance
This workshop is designed for beginners, and those with experience looking to refine their technique.
Please bring your own scythe if you have one! Scythes are available to borrow for an additional cost of £5 (payable in cash on the day).
About Your Instructor
John Grundy is an experienced scything instructor who teaches regularly. He has many years of experience in scything, organic gardening, and working within the conservation sector.
About the Site
The workshop will take place on one of our newly created wildflower meadows, helping support our ongoing work to manage this site for wildlife.
Experienced Scythers Welcome
We are also welcoming experienced scythers to join us on a voluntary basis for a day of mowing together. If you are an experienced scyther who would like to take part, please contact hermione@bordersforesttrust.org — you would be very welcome.
What to Bring
- Sturdy footwear
- Clothing suitable for a Scottish summer (sunhat, sunscreen, and waterproofs)
- Packed lunch and plenty of fluids — there is no drinking water available on site
Arrival instructions will be emailed to you closer to the time.
Please do not bring your dog to this event.
This workshop is suitable for those over 18 years of age.
Cancellations
Cancellations within 14 days of the event date will not be eligible for a refund.
