Queen Mary recently joined the Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, as a university partner. The Institute was founded by Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL and Warwick. This represents a £5M investment for the University and it presents us with a major opportunity to take a leading role in this high profile national initiative.
The roots of Data Science were established during World War II in the pioneering work of Alan Turing and the codebreakers of Bletchley Park who produced vital intelligence in support of Allied military operations on land, at sea and in the air.  Bletchley Park also heralded the birth of the information age with the industrialisation of the codebreaking processes enabled by machines such as the Turing/Welchman Bombe, and the world’s first electronic computer, Colossus that arguably was the first leap into Data Science, as we know it today. To celebrate the future of Data Science, we are pleased to invite Dr Sue Black who led the campaign to save Bletchley Park, to give our Garriott Lecture this year. 
After a visit to Bletchley Park in 2008 Dr Sue Black started a campaign to save the site. Using her network she quickly got coverage in traditional media: appeared on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and on the BBC News. It wasn’t until she started using Twitter however that the real positive changes began to happen. Social media and the way it can connect like minded people so quickly really ramped up the campaign bringing together thousands of people to make a positive difference. Sue discusses traditional vs social media and campaigning, what works and why. She has now written a book about the campaign: “Saving Bletchley Park”

A Technology Evangelist and Digital Skills Expert, Sue was awarded an <A HREF="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35202667" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">OBE for “services to technology” </A>in the 2016 Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. She is now a UK government advisor, thought leader, Honorary Professor of Computer Science at UCL, social entrepreneur, writer and public speaker. She set up the UK’s first online network for women in tech BCSWomen and her current social enterprise <A HREF="http://techmums.co/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">#techmums</A> teaches mums tech skills and builds their confidence encouraging them into education, entrepreneurship and employment.

Doors open at 5.30pm for a 5.45pm start. The one-hour lecture will be followed by a drinks reception. 
 
The Garriott Lecture is a popular annual science lecture run by the Faculty of Science and Engineering, named after astronaut, explorer, and computer game designer, Richard Garriott. The lectures are free and open for all to attend.
