Review:
Óscar Peyrou has always been an eccentric, and that has yet to change in his old age. His new, radical process of film criticism is to use only a film’s poster. It is as bemusing as it is fascinating - illustrated by Ewan McGregor’s baffled response when questioned on his film’s poster during a press junket. But SEARCHING FOR OSCAR is much more than a film celebrating an old man and his idiosyncratic ways. Instead, it functions as an expressive, personal coda to his professional and, in parts, personal life.
While he centres the documentary around Óscar’s new approach to the festival circuit, director Octavio Guerra is keen to dig beneath Óscar’s outrageous façade, to find what lies beneath. There is much to discover - the love of Óscar’s life died two years ago, a year after he had left her for another woman. He lives alone, guilt-ridden and with failing sight. Guerra does not revel in misery or distaste, however, and instead explores the joys, regrets, and anarchic thoughts of a man in his twilight. A complex, entertaining, and touching slice of a rather bizarre life. / By Milo Garner
