This seminar delves into the intricate layers of digital systems in civil services and urban environments, exploring their role in shaping experiences and interactions within cities.

It’s a continuation of Media Evolution's pursuit in Wise Cities, aiming to further the use of digitisation in build environments and broaden the ambitions and desires of smart city concepts.

During the seminar – that's a side event at the Øredev Conference, organised by Media Evolution and DigIT Hub Sweden – we will dissect the insides, interfaces, and human interaction of and with digital infrastructures, providing insights on potential open-source development for civic services, collaboration between agencies, the physicality of digital infrastructures, and the transparency of digital systems in public spaces.

Speakers:

Johan Linåker (RISE) is an empirical software engineering researcher who will speak about how cities and municipalities can share and collaborate on developing and maintaining Open Source Software-based systems for their common use cases. He will provide examples of existing collaborations and how some actors take the lead and help others along the road.

Ingrid Burrington is a writer and artist based in Brooklyn, NY, interested in power, landscape, technology, and narratives constructed around all of the above. Ingrid spoke at The Conference 2014.

Jonathan Pichot will present his work on transparency of digital systems in public space. He is a technologist and urbanist focusing on how cities can use technology in new ways that address challenges in the built environment. Jonathan is one of three residents in the Malmö Residency 2023 program.

Violet Whitney is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP where she teaches tangible and spatial computing courses and has been a Director of Product and an Associate Director of Design at Sidewalk Labs, the Google initiative focused on building future cities. At the seminar she will present her work on the Periodic Table of Spatial Computing.

The seminar is organised as a part of DigIT Hub Sweden – an initiative that helps companies and the public sector in Southern Sweden to digitise. The initiative is co-funded by the European Union, Region Blekinge, Region Kronoberg, Region Skåne, and Vinnova.
