About this Event

The BSN ILA Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Sessions are a series of twilight events for international school staff. Each session will have a focused area for SEND and will be led by practicing teachers with specific expertise in each field.  There will be an update on current best practice underpinned by research evidence alongside an opportunity to meet colleagues from schools across the Netherlands.

High tea will be served from 16:30 onwards.  We look forward to welcoming you as we share and develop knowledge, expertise and practice across our community.

Who is this for?

These sessions are for teaching and learning staff in schools including teaching/learning assistants and teachers.

What will we cover in this session?

We will explore attention deficit and hyperactivity; current research and best practice.  There will be opportunities to learn from each other to share professional expertise and experiences.

Guest Facilitators:

Jo Wellington joined The BSN in August 2016 as AEN Lead Teacher at Junior School Diamanthorst (JSD). She has a passion for working with and supporting families of children with AEN particularly in an International setting.  Jo recently completed her National Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator Award and has enjoyed the additional knowledge and study this has involved as well as applying this to her role at JSD. Prior to working at JSD, Jo worked for nine years at Bangkok Patana School. The first five years were as a KS2 Class teacher, before changing career paths to Learning Support Teacher. Jo completed the Graduate Teaching Programme in Surrey in 2005 with the view to becoming an Educational Psychologist.  This interest started to grow during her time studying Psychology  at university and volunteering in a local Special Needs School. However, Jo’s love of teaching, led her to continue her career in the school setting.

Having spent up to the age of 14 in International schools, Jo has first-hand experience of what it is like to be an expat child and the joys of learning alongside children from all over the world. Changing countries and experiencing new cultures can be challenging for families and children – especially those with AEN. Teaching in an inclusive way and having high expectations for all is key to making everyone feel welcome, accepted and reach their full potential.

Lucy Best is another AEN Lead Teacher at British School in the Netherlands, (JSV). Having completed her PGCE in primary education in East London, Lucy has spent the majority of her career teaching internationally. An initial  1 year move to rural Uganda as a volunteer resulted in leaving 5 years later, having taught in an international school in the capital city for 4 years. Rome was her next destination and it was here she focused her skills and interest in special educational needs teaching, and completed the PGCSenco.

Since August 2018, Lucy has worked at Junior school Vlaskamp and is excited by the opportunity to work  and train alongside a wide range of educators, from a multitude of backgrounds, to ensure that the international school experience for all students, including those with additional needs is positive and successful for both them and their family. Lucy has a particular interest in both Specific Learning difficulties and ADHD and is passionate about raising awareness of these needs amongst both families and staff, especially in a culturally diverse international education setting.
