Sensory-informed gymnastics sessions for Autistic children. *DORCHESTER RESIDENTS ONLY*
Sensory Explorers are small, supportive sensory-informed gymnastics sessions for Autistic children and their parent or carer at Dorchester YMCA. This session is for DORCHESTER RESIDENTS ONLY.
The sessions are facilitated by local Occupational Therapist Jennie Boyt, an experienced practitioner specialising in sensory integration and supporting neurodivergent children and young people.
The children will be able to freely explore a range of gymnastics equipment and move in ways that reflect their own sensory and physical preferences. Jennie will observe how each child engages with movement and equipment. She will look at individual sensory preferences, including sensory-seeking or sensory-avoidant behaviours, as well as areas where a child appears regulated, challenged or in need of additional support.
Drawing on these observations, Jennie will offer practical advice and strategies to help parents and carers better understand their child’s sensory needs. The aim is to provide ideas that can be adapted and recreated at home, supporting day-to-day regulation, wellbeing and participation.
Who can attend?
These sessions are open to Autistic children and their parent or carer from families living in households with a Dorchester postcode (DT1 or DT2).
Please note: Each session is limited to a maximum of four children to ensure a supportive and low-pressure experience.
This session forms part of a pilot scheme of 3 sessions funded by Dorchester Town Council.
