About this Event

For some children, sensory processing does not occur as it should. Sensory Processing Difficulties affect people in different ways. Some senses over respond to sensory stimuli, some may under respond and some may fluctuate in response. For example, a child may over respond to a label in their clothing or seams on their socks (touch sense), whilst constantly seeking movement due to being under responsive in their balance (vestibular) sense.

Children who have experienced developmental trauma in utero and in early childhood can have on-going difficulties, impacting on their functional abilities. Occupational Therapist and Attachment Counsellor, Eadaoin Breathnach developed Sensory Attachment Intervention. This approach combines Sensory Integration theory with Attachment theory. It recognises the need to target the areas of the brain that are the source of the dysfunction, and works on re-wiring the brains of children with developmental trauma. This can be done through understanding the child’s sensory needs and developing sensory regulating strategies that can help the child dampen down over-responsive senses and activate under-responsive ones, as well as supporting the child’s ability to accept co-regulation.

What are the benefits of attending:

  • Introduction to Sensory Processing and Sensory Attachment Intervention.
  • Gain an understanding of the senses and sensory processing, and how these can impact on a child’s behaviour and ability to function with day to day tasks.
  • Learn about some considerations and adaptations that can be made within the environment to support children with sensory-attachment difficulties. .

So, who are Children’s Sensory Therapy, and what do we do?

Children’s Sensory Therapy are a group of Independent, highly experienced and friendly Occupational Therapists and Therapy Assistants, specialising in Paediatrics and Sensory Integration Therapy, and with a specialist knowledge of Sensory Attachment Therapy.

The services we offer are personalised and tailored to the needs of the child and their family, and we pride ourselves on delivering a quality service without long waiting lists.

Our aim is to support not only the child, but to ensure we provide support to everyone involved in the child’s care. This can include working with professionals, parents / carers, teachers and teaching assistants. By working with everyone it encourages the development of co-regulation, therefore helping us all to build positive relationships and experiences with the child.

We strongly believe that all children should be given the chance to reach their full potential through access to school, play, friendships and opportunities for shared joy, pleasure and fun.

Some of these areas may be challenging for some children. With our knowledge and professional expertise we can help to support the child and their support network, by encouraging them to access learning, offering advice on adaptations to the environment in which they learn or live, and by helping them develop their skills, all aiding the development and a better understanding of co-regulation.

We work across several environments; home, school, and we also offer sessions in our Sensory Integration Clinic at Midlands Child and Family Therapy centre
