About this event

If you've never been to a Women's Circle, welcome to "Telling Our Stories"!

This is a space for women of all ages and stages. From the moment you step into the welcoming warmth of Kemps bookshop, you'll be able to relax and know you don't have to perform, or do or be ANYTHING for ANYONE for an hour and a half! The Circle offers time out for you to re-charge, and enjoy the support and sense of connection that comes from really listening to the stories and fragments of stories from other women, and from being truly heard yourself. It's an uplifting experience.

If you're not in the mood for speaking, no matter! You are welcome just as you are.

A Circle is the ideal place to find how we are all really both different and the same...

You can expect:

  • a short welcome and a few guidelines for the evening and how the Circle will work;
  • a guided relaxation to quiet mind and body;
  • a couple of reflective questions/ideas to consider;
  • time to contribute and listen - unhurried and judgment free

Doors open at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start. Chairs will be available, but feel free to bring a cushion for extra comfort. There won't be a set refreshment time so please bring a flask should you wish!

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to bring anything, prepare anything or speak out loud?

No! Come as you are. This is a space to relax whether you contribute verbally or not. If you've never been to a Circle, come with curiosity. It's your presence that matters! There is no pressure.

Who is leading the Circle?

My name is Jenny Waddington and I live locally. I've been a psychotherapist in York for almost 20 years. See my full profile when you click on Under the Baobab Circles link under the Organized By heading.

Is there a discussion theme? If not what do people talk about?!

The Circle isn't a discussion, but contributions usually create a life and energy of their own. After a reflective prompt, you'll then be free to contribute any thoughts, feelings, stories, or reflections that arise for you. Come and be properly heard in a supportive, advice-free zone.

What if I have any other questions beforehand?

Feel free to contact me via the Contact the Organizer link if there's anything else you'd like to check.

What about confidentiality?

We will mutually agree at the start of the Circle that any contributions will be kept within the meeting in order to maintain respect and trust.

Is this a one-off event?

No. The Circle will be held monthly and you can attend any or all. Each one to be advertised separately and booked separately.

Why are you called "Under the Baobab" Circles

The iconic Baobab Tree is found in Africa (and I'm from Zimbabwe) and is known as The Tree of Life, with mythical and healing properties. It survives tough conditions, and many communities have traditionally gathered in circles in its shade for telling stories, teaching and community connection.
