Sharing the Table: a Potluck hosted by YorSpace - January
Join YorSpace for an evening of shared food, conversation & explore owning land and assets together as community. Bring a dish & big ideas!
This relaxed gathering will bring together new faces and old, a mix of local residents, social enterprises, community groups, and York’s changemakers to explore the projects you want YorSpace toundertake next - be it housing, commercial, or something else entirely!
We want to create space for people to think about how, together, we can strengthen community ownership of property, protect spaces for local use, and keep the city affordable for generations to come. We especially want to encourage existing businesses and groups who might be looking for premises and local residents interested in future co-operative and community-led housing projects.
Expect a potluck dinner, short stories from local voices, and creative activities to share our wishful thinking and opportunities for the city.
What to bring:
If you are able, please bring a dish, or two. Ideally something that will cover 4+ servings.
If everyone does this, we’ll have enough food for everyone, and maybe even leftovers to take home!
A microwave, oven, and hob are available to use on site.
Please come prepared to write out allergens and ingredients.
We recognise that not everyone will be able to provide food for this event. If this is you, please still come along and don't worry about it, your presence and energy is more important!
Who is YorSpace?
YorSpace has spent the last 13 years driving sustainable, affordable housing. Their first affordable housing project, Lowfield Green, offers secure, sustainable homes where residents are co-owners. The project champions cooperative living, shared decision-making, and long-term affordability.
As a Community Land Trust, the organisation is centred around improving communities by delivering community-led projects that stay affordable in perpetuity. Committed to exploring mechanisms that circulate and recycle community investment within a local co-operative economy.
“The benefits of turning our property market on its head goes well beyond housing. With community ownership, local businesses can thrive in rent-capped premises, youth spaces and social hubs can return, and high streets can be shaped around need and interest of those that live there.”
- An Excerpt from The YorSpace Times newspaper.
Come along to the event to pick up a copy of our newspaper and read more about the affordability crisis in York, and what we can do about it!
Note on the venue:
SPACE is a community-led coworking space situated in the attic space above Brew York Walmgate. To find us, enter through the bottle shop on the ground floor, up the stairs, through the door towards the BY toilets, and up the graffiti staircase.
Unfortunately, this location does not have lift access. We apologise for this and wish it was different! Please do get in touch with us if you have any accessibility concerns and we will do our best to cater where we can and/or consider these for future events.
