Learn about the latest work of Delfina alumni artist Ahmet Öğüt.

Please note this event will take place on THURSDAY 24 FEBURARY.Starting with his three most-recent works, artist Ahmet will present and discuss his practice. These include: A Day in Ha(a)rlem (20201-22), a collaboration with artist Monilola Olayemi Ilupeju, considering the shared past, yet divergent legacies of the homonymous Dutch and American cities; the lecture-performance, What Does a Stone Say? Plutocrats of Exoplanets (2021), exploring the usually hidden, long and often complicated journey of negotiations involved in producing and presenting an artwork; and It Can and Has Been (2021), an ‘experience’ which shifts viewers into performers through evoking their own memories of recent historical events which have taken place in Istanbul.Continuing back, Ahmet Öğüt will also touch on earlier works and projects, and consider the evolution, shifts, and ongoing themes of his practice – leading back to his 2012 residency at Delfina, now a decade ago, during which he developed The Silent University, an on-going solidarity-based knowledge exchange platform by displaced people and forced migrants.The work of Ahmet Öğüt can be found on the street, on stage, in lecture halls, and museums. Working across media, the Kurdish artist transforms different histories and common narratives. Many of his projects are long-term, demonstrate a commitment to a collaborative working process, and take place outside the traditional spheres of art, testifying to art’s ability to permeate and affect a variety of institutional, social and political structures.Following the artist’s presentation, Ahmet will be briefly in-conversation with Delfina Foundation Residency Curator Viviana Checchia, who will then open up the floor for questions and discussion.---COVID-19Due to the ongoing pandemic we request all guests do a lateral flow test before attending and we require face masks to be worn at all times while in the building, unless exempt.---BIOGRAPHYAhmet Öğüt has exhibited widely, with recent with solo presentations at Kunstverein Dresden, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Chisenhale Gallery, and Van Abbemuseum. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Asia Society Triennial: We Do Not Dream Alone (2021); In the Presence of Absence, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2020); Zero Gravity at Nam SeMA, Seoul Museum of Art (2019); Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale (2018); the British Art Show 8 (2015-2017); 11th Gwangju Biennale (2016); the 13th Biennale de Lyon (2015); 19th Biennale of Sydney (2014); Performa 13, the Fifth Biennial of Visual Art Performance, New York (2013); the 7th Liverpool Biennial (2012); the 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011); the New Museum Triennial, New York (2009); and the 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art (2008).---TIMINGSDoors open at 18:30.
