About this event

We’re excited to launch a new series of legal seminars focusing on assisted suicide, freedom of speech and transparency.

Join us on Monday 19 May as we delve into transparency in the Courts and why justice must be done in the light.

Families involved in end of life cases are often prevented from raising awareness about their loved one's condition by transparency orders. This seminar looks at the impact of these orders on those families, exploring the case for real transparency in these cases.

In a landmark judgment delivered this April, the Supreme Court has severely curtailed the secretive practices of the Family Division judges in cases involving withdrawal of life-saving treatment from critically ill children. Following a seven-years-long legal battle involving two families supported by the Christian Legal Centre, Rashid and Aliya Abbasi and Lanre Haastrup, the injunctions which prevented the families from telling their stories have now been discharged.

When: Monday 19 May, 18:00 – 20:00. Light refreshments will be served.

Where: Christian Concern, 70 Wimpole Street, London, W1G 8AX.

Tickets cost only £10 and include drinks and nibbles.

While this seminar is primarily aimed at legal professionals, it is open to all.

Speakers

Bruno Quintavalle (Barrister)

Bruno specialises in litigation in the area of Christian freedoms. He recently won the case of Abbasi supported by Christian Legal Centre in the Court of Appeal. The Abbasi family challenged the excessively broad reporting restrictions that were placed around a dispute that arose between the parents and the doctors over the care and medical treatment of their 6 year old daughter, who died in 2019 at the age of 2 years. The outcome of the appeal to the Supreme Court, heard during 2024, is awaited.

Pavel Stroilov (Consultant, Christian Legal Centre)

Pavel Stroilov is a political exile of Putin’s Russia, having fled to the UK after his research as a historian put his life and liberty at risk. He then studied law at King’s College London and University of Law. He works as a legal consultant for Christian Legal Centre.

Client featured

Dean Gregory, father of Indi Gregory (Christian Legal Centre client)

Dean Gregory, whose daughter Indi died after being refused the freedom to continue hospital treatment overseas. In the case of 8-month-old Indi Gregory, a judge ruled that it was in her best interest to have her life support removed against the wishes of her family and despite the offer of further treatment in Italy at no cost to the NHS. Indi was diagnosed with a rare mitochondrial disease, but her parents have maintained that despite her disability, she was happy and responsive to their touch.

Throughout the legal battle the family was supported by the Christian Legal Centre.
