Description

SHL Open Workshop: Network Visualisation with Gephi for Beginners

Workshop Leader: Andrew Salway (Sussex)

NB. This is largely the same workshop that ran in April 2019.

This workshop is for researchers who want to learn how to visualise network data, e.g. links and connections in social media data, mailing lists, online forums, etc. We'll be using Gephi which is free to download and is “the leading visualisation and exploration software for all kinds of graphs and networks.”

The workshop will introduce some fundamental terminology and cover all the basics: the use of layout algorithms, resizing and colouring nodes and links according to desired parameters, plus a little about network statistics (e.g. for community detection). Our running example will be a tweet dataset distributed by Twitter in October 2018, thought to show Russian and Iranian disinformation operations. However, the techniques you'll learn are relevant for visualising diverse kinds of network data.

The workshop is open to everybody. No prior experience with Gephi or network visualisation will be assumed. Participants from outside of the University of Sussex are also welcome.

You will need a laptop with Gephi installed** and some example network data to work with. Instructions for installing Gephi and example network data will be circulated before the workshop; you may also wish to bring your own data. Alternatively, if you come to the Digital Humanities Lab 30-40 minutes before the start of the workshop then one of our technical staff can assist you with installation.

For questions, email a.j.salway@sussex.ac.uk

**Some spare laptops may also be available for loan: please enquire in advance.
