SHORT COURSE: Developing and evaluating complex interventions

The MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit is delivering a course based on the new MRC/NIHR Framework

The MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit is delivering a course based on the new MRC/NIHR Framework for Developing and Evaluating Complex Interventions. What will the course cover? This course will provide participants with an understanding of the complex intervention research process. Presentations and activities will relate to the main concepts of developing/identifying and evaluating complex interventions and support participants to apply the principles to their own research. It will focus on the overarching considerations required to develop complex intervention research projects, rather than the details of study design, and enable researchers to develop and conduct research that will provide the most useful evidence for decision making. The Framework for Developing and Evaluating Complex Interventions is required pre-reading for the course. Additionally, there will be a small amount of reading to do between the sessions. Course DeliveryOnline: using the Zoom platformDates: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th and 12th May 2022, 10am to 1pm each day. Participants are expected to attend all live sessions. Teaching: A mix of presentations, facilitated small group discussions and activities, and whole group discussion/Q&AThere will be the option to sign up for a one-to-one session with one of our facilitators, to discuss your own research and the application of the learning throughout the course. This will take place during the course or shortly after and will be associated with an additional cost. Details will be emailed to course participants, and it is an optional addition. Who is the course aimed at? The course is aimed at those with an interest in complex intervention research, and with some prior experience or familiarity with the literature. We take a broad definition of intervention, as being an action that aims to bring about change. This term is used for everything from medical treatment to changes in policy; it could be something developed and implemented by the research team, for example a surgical procedure, or something beyond the researchers’ control, for example a change in welfare policy, such as the implementation of universal credit. In some interventions, the main aim is not necessarily to bring about health outcomes, but the intervention may indirectly lead to changes in health. The course will be of relevance to postgraduate students and health researchers interested and/or already working in intervention development and evaluation.Who will deliver the course? The course will be led by the team at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the University of Glasgow who co-authored the Framework for Developing and Evaluating Complex Interventions. Together they have a wealth of experience in all phases of research related to complex interventions. What is the cost? The course cost is £500. A 50% discount is available for participants from low and middle income countries (see list )https://www.oecd.org/dac/financing-sustainable-development/development-finance-standards/DAC-List-ODA-Recipients-for-reporting-2021-flows.pdf Additionally, a limited number of free places are available to those who have no access to funds to cover the course fees. If you wish to apply for this, please contact Olga Utkina-Macaskill for details – please only do so if you do not have access to a training budget that you could use for this course.
