Sign Language (Level 1A)

The Language Centre offers a variety of courses available to all students and staff of Queen's University Belfast.Courses are also open to members of the general public.Choose from our tutor-led language classes, computer-based language learning courses or sign language courses.

The Language Centre at Queen's

<H2>Signature Level 1 Award in BSL (Level 1A):  </H2>
<H2>Tuesday 18:00 - 20:00 </H2>
Duration: 64 hours
The Language Centre currently run a Sign Language programme which includes classes at beginner and post-beginner levels.  Sign Language Classes which begin in October will run for the full academic year, including some Saturdays.  Please note that all Saturday classes will be held in the Peter Froggatt Centre, 2nd Floor, Room 018.

The Qualification is split into three units.
<OL>
<LI>BSL101: Introduction to BSL: Topics covered include; at home, people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests and activities, and weather.</LI>
<LI>BSL102: Conversational BSL: Topics covered include; at home, people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests and activities, and weather.</LI>
<LI>BSL103: BSL at School, College or Work: Topics covered include; getting around, exchanging information, refreshments and using numbers.</LI>

Each unit is assessed individually by having a conversation with your BSL teacher. For units 102 and 103 the exam is video recorded and sent to Signature for marking. Unit 101 is assessed by your class tutor.

What are the course fees?
There are different fees depending upon your registration type, QUB student, staff or members of the public. Please note that there is no concession fee available with our Sign Language courses.

Are there examination fees?
Your examination fees are included in your course fee.  You can have one attempt at BSL101, 102 and 103.  Students will have to pay for any resits.  Resits will be organised by the Language Centre and will take place Monday to Friday during normal office hours.  
Are these courses accredited? 
Upon successful completion of all 3 modules students are awarded a Signature Certificate in British Sign Language (level 1).  In addition QUB Students can use Sign Language Level 1 to apply for the Degree Plus Award, Route A.  To qualify students must attend a minimum of 70% of classes and pass a minimum of 2 out of 3 modules by the .  
Degree Plus is a new award for Queen’s students designed to provide official recognition of extra-curricular activities including Language Centre language courses which are open to all students whatever their degree subject. Employers are looking for graduates who can demonstrate that they have the skills needed for workplace success – the Degree Plus Award will help you do this!
How often do I attend?  
Students attend a weekly 2 hour class on either a Tuesday (class 1A) or Thursday (class 1B) evening.  In addition students are required to attend several Saturday classes throughout the year.  These classes are for 3 hours from 10am-1pm.  Sign Language is a very intensive class and full attendance is required.
What's the refund policy?
All refunds must be requested in writing and accompanied by your payment receipt before the start of the course. For all registered students, refunds are not normally paid after the beginning of classes. Any such request must be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion.  All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
