Sign Language (Level 2)

The Language Centre offers a variety of courses available to all students and staff of Queen's University Belfast.Courses are also open to members of the general public.Choose from our tutor-led language classes, computer-based language learning courses or sign language courses.

The Language Centre at Queen's

<H2>Signature Level 2 Award in BSL:  </H2>
<H2>Monday 18:00 - 20:00 </H2>
Duration: 100 hours / 1 year
The Language Centre currently run a Sign Language programme which includes classes at beginner and post-beginner levels.  Sign Language Classes which begin in October will run for the full academic year, including some Saturdays.  Please note that all Saturday classes will be held in the Peter Froggatt Centre, 2nd Floor, Room 017.  See course timetable for Level 2 below:

The Qualification is split into three units.
<UL>
<LI>BSL201: Receptive Skills</LI>
<LI>BSL202: Productive Skills</LI>
<LI>BSL203: Conversational Skills</LI>
</UL>
All three units are externally assessed by a Signature Assessor. BSL201 is a multiple choice exam while both BSL202 and BSL203 are filmed. 
The qualification has 4 themes:

<LI>Theme 1 Mandatory Everyday Conversation</LI>
<LI>Theme 2 Optional Eating and Drinking</LI>
<LI>Theme 3 Optional Spending and Shopping</LI>
<LI>Theme 4 Optional Travel and Holidays</LI>
</OL>
Theme 1 is mandatory; learners will study 2 other themes out of the 3 optional themes above. The themes are chosen by the teacher. Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 in Unit 201. The hours within the unit include time for practice and assessment. In Units 202 and 203 learners will consolidate and build upon the vocabulary and grammatical features of Theme 1.
Themes 2, 3 and 4 include the topics within Theme 1. Learners are expected to widen their grasp and use of BSL grammar and vocabulary in these units, whilst using a proportion of the learning hours to practice their skills and carry out the assessment for Units 202 and 203. Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and the first choice of the optional themes for Unit 202.
Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and the second choice of the optional themes for Unit 203.

What are the course fees?
There are different fees depending upon your registration type, QUB student, staff or members of the public. Please note that there is no concession fee available with our Sign Language courses.

Are there examination fees?
Your examination fees are included in your course fee.  You can have one attempt at BSL 201, 202 and 203.  Students will have to pay for any resits.  Resits will be organised by the Language Centre and will take place Monday to Friday during normal office hours.  
Are these courses accredited? 
Upon successful completion of all 3 modules students are awarded a Signature Certificate in British Sign Language (level 2).  In addition QUB Students can use Sign Language Level 2 to apply for the Degree Plus Award, Route A.  To qualify students must attend a minimum of 70% of classes and pass a minimum of 2 out of 3 modules.  
Degree Plus is a new award for Queen’s students designed to provide official recognition of extra-curricular activities including Language Centre language courses which are open to all students whatever their degree subject. Employers are looking for graduates who can demonstrate that they have the skills needed for workplace success – the Degree Plus Award will help you do this!
How often do I attend?  
Students attend a weekly 2 hour class on Monday evenings.  In addition students are required to attend a number of Saturday classes throughout the year.  These classes are for 3 hours from 10am-2pm.  Sign Language is a very intensive class and full attendance is required.
What's the refund policy?
All refunds must be requested in writing and accompanied by your payment receipt before the start of the course. For all registered students, refunds are not normally paid after the beginning of classes. Any such request must be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion.  All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
