SMR Rigging Practitioner Course (Stirling)

Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR) represents25 Mountain Rescue Teams(MRTs) made up of highly trained volunteers who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to emergencies and carry out a specialist search and rescue service in the mountains and remote communities in Scotland to keep people safe and help people if and when they get into difficulty.

To introduce attendees to the knowledge and skill required to create raising and lowering rescue systems

<h3>Introduction:</h3>Mountain Rescue Team members will gain knowledge on how to create rescue systems to rescue casualties from a variety of differing scenarios. This course covers systems to lower and raise either a rescuer or a stretcher with an attendant.

<h3>Experience required:</h3>This course is aimed at team members who have received crag technical training from their team and wish to improve and consolidate best practice in modern rigging systems, which include; single rope and shared rope systems, and a variety of anchor systems including ground anchors/stakes.An emphasis is placed on knowledge of equipment strength and the skill of engineering rigging systems to maximise strengths for single and multiple rescue loads.The course will also cover a variety of belay equipment and the principles of self-arrest and non-self-arrest rope capture systems.

<h3>Course objectives:</h3>By the end of the course, training will have been provided on:<ul><li>Safe movement and positioning on steep terrain and the crag environment</li><li>The limitations, advantages, disadvantages and appropriate selection and safe use of rescue equipment</li><li>How to tie and use knots appropriately and safely</li><li>How to use a variety of anchor systems suitable for rescue loads</li><li>Methods of attaching a stretcher to a rescue system</li><li>The roles of stretcher attendants in rescue systems</li><li>How to create and use lowering/raising systems for both single and shared rope systems</li></ul>

<h3>Accommodation:</h3>The course will start at 2000hrs on Friday, 19 May 2023 at <a href="https://www.stirlingcourthotel.co.uk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Stirling Court Hote</a>l, Airthrey Road, Stirling, FK9 4LAYou will be booked in for Friday and Saturday nights on a B&B basis (single rooms). Packed lunches will be provided for Saturday and Sunday, as well as Saturday night dinner.No meal is provided on Friday evening.Please ensure that you bring something to put your packed lunch in, as well as a drinking bottle, flask and any additional snacks you may want.

<h3>What you need to bring:</h3>All participants are requested to ensure they have transport arranged as the course programme will necessitate travel to and from training venues (approximately 30 minutes drive). Where possible we ask course participants to bring a team 4×4 vehicle.Sufficient personal equipment is required to enable candidates to operate within a mountainous and crag environment and in all weather conditions for the duration of the course and don't forget the following:Midge net, midge spray, Harness, helmet , team radio + spare battery, personal MR and crag rescue kit.Participants are encouraged to bring technical rescue equipment as used by their own team. In addition we would encourage participants to bring along copies of any team rigging guidelines so that we can start to share this type of information.

This fee allows us to offset any costs which we will be incurred as a result of late cancellation.
