Overview

Explore the extraordinary melting pot of nationalities, political beliefs, artistic talents and bohemian habits which have shaped this area

From rural origins as a royal hunting park (Soho is like "Tally Ho!") Soho has evolved in a quite extraordinary way, particularly shaped by many influxes of refugees from a wide variety of countries. Exiled Greeks, Protestant French, Italians, Jews, Russians, Prussians, Chinese...bringing a unique blend of exotic food and revolutionary thinking.

Its also been home to one of London's earliest and most tolerant gay communities: and to the most extraordinary range of artists, writers, musicians, comedians...

So where else would our walk take in such diverse figures as Oscar Wilde, Peter Cook, Mozart, Christine Keeler, Karl Marx, Paul McCartney, William Hazlitt and Theodore, King of Corsica?

Our walk explored how all these communities and individuals have shaped Soho and driven its continual evolution.
