CLAMOR: THE SEARCH FOR THE DISAPPEARED OF THE SOUTH AMERICAN DICTATORSHIPS by JAN ROCHAIn the 1970s thousands of refugees fled to Brazil to escape the brutal repression which followed rightwing military coups against democratically elected governments in neighbouring countries. Appalled at the atrocities they denounced, including mass disappearances and secret detention camps, a small group in São Paulo setup CLAMOR to denounce these human rights violations and help in the search for the disappeared, especially the children. Today most Brazilians are unaware of this chapter in their recent history. The use of forced disappearance as an extra-legal weapon against political opponents to avoid accountability has since been used in many other countries.Panel Speakers:Jan Rocha: Journalist and author, founder member of CLAMOR (Committee for the Defence of Human Rights in the countries of the Southern Cone).Dr Francesca Lessa: Departmental Lecturer in Latin American Studies and Development at the Oxford Department of International Development, Latin American Centre, Oxford School of Global and Area Studies.
