Walk: Somerset Coast - Day 8: Highbridge to Brean Down
This is a fantastic opportunity to join walkers on the 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge for part of their walk.
On the last day we set out from Apex Park and walk along The Esplanade at Burnham-on-Sea where we pass the the shortest pier in England and the leaning tower of St. Andrew’s church, before heading onto the sandy beach to see Burnham’s iconic ‘lighthouse on legs’, followed by the Berrow Dunes Conservation Area and the skeletal wreck of the Nornen a Norwegian barque that sank in a storm in 1897.
Continuing on the beach we reach Brean Down a natural pier at the end of the Mendip Hills. Touring the Down we visit Brean Down Fort and enjoy the views across the Channel to the South Wales coast and the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm. If the weather’s clear we will be able to look back and see almost our entire route on the Somerset coast. Returning to the National Trust at the bottom of the Down we will end our walk with a celebration of completion.
Along the entire Challenge route there are stamping stations for the Somerset & Exmoor Coast Trail Passport with maps, diary pages and spaces to collect stamps on your walk.
Look out for events, offers and promotions at the location of the walk each day, some of our supporters are timing activities to make your trip as enjoyable as possible with special treats such as packed lunches or cream teas available at the start or end of your day’s walking.
Due to the challenge nature for some participants of this walk, we have made the decision not to accept dogs on the walk.
