Event description
SONA will guide you through the process to create your own soundscape from scratch, from collecting sounds to editing and exporting tracks.

About this Event

In this practical workshop for complete beginners SONA will walk you through some of the techniques used in the development of their sound installations. You will be guided to create a short soundscape from start to finish going through the following steps:

  • Research and planning
  • Sound collection and generation
  • Effects and manipulation
  • Soundscape composition

Please note you will need to bring a laptop computer and headphones for this workshop. If you do not have access to either of these please let us know when you register and we can arrange for you to borrow a machine.

We will be using the free software Audacity to edit sounds on our computers – please download and install it in advance. If you want to try out Audacity in advance there are loads of great tutorials online – the Audacity manual is a good starting point.

Audacity – https://www.audacityteam.org/download/

You will also need to bring a sound recording device – you can use your smartphone for this or any handheld sound recorder. Again, if you have trouble accessing this equipment please let us know by emailing sonawomen@gmail.com and we can provide something. Remember, you must be able to transfer sound-files between your recorder and your laptop, so please bring any cables and power supplies that you need.

Please also sign up for an account at freesound.org – this is a free online sample library.

Tickets are available on a pay as you feel basis with the following suggested prices:

£10 – Student/unwaged

£20 – Waged

£30 – Supporter

All proceeds from the workshop will go towards the ongoing running costs of Sidney & Matilda which is an independent arts venue in Sheffield city centre.

Free tickets are available for personal assistants – please let us know at registration if you need one.

Please note that this workshop is not suitable for under-16s unless they are accompanied by an adult.
