Have you ever wondered how the magical sounds in your favourite video games are created? Curious what it’s like to design the noise for squashing a Goomba, hearing a dragon breathe fire, or summoning a Jinn from an ancient lamp? Join us for a hands-on, free sound design workshop with Sam Thomas (he/him), Lead Sound Designer at Dlala Studios, whose work includes the BAFTA-nominated Disney Illusion Island. He’s bringing 11 years of work experience in games, tips for affordable tools, and a love for the craft to the table. Sam stated, “Sound Design is the most fun discipline in video games”, and that he’s looking forward to sharing it with the audience!

What to expect:• A fun and interactive exploration of sound design for games, led by an industry professional with over a decade of experience• A chance to break down a real game scene and discover the process that goes into making and adding sounds• Live demonstrations of making sounds from everyday objects – and even recording new sounds together during the session• Insights into what makes sound design playful and creative• Practical advice on how to create larger-than-life effects and build immersive player experiences• A look at accessible, free tools like MeldaProduction plugins and Reaper Audio Work Station – you will learn that you don’t need expensive equipment to start your own journey into games audioWhether you’re dreaming of a career in games, are struggling to add sounds to your own indie game, are curious about how it all works, or just love the idea of getting creative with sound – this workshop is for you!

About the programmeThis taster is a sneak peek of something much bigger happening in Eye this summer: ELEVATE: Eye – a five-day, fully-funded games development programme from Game Anglia, supported by the Progress Power Community Benefit Fund and Babergh and Mid Suffolk Council.The programme is open to anyone aged 14+ in Eye and nearby parishes of Yaxley, Mellis, Thrandeston, and Brome &amp; Oakley (with no upper age limit!). ELEVATE: Eye will help you learn how to tell your story by making a narrative interactive game – no coding experience needed! Participants will get hands-on with game engines, storytelling, design and more, plus the opportunity to work together in a final game jam.We’re proud to be bringing this opportunity to Eye in collaboration with The Bank Arts Centre, as part of our mission to make games education accessible and exciting for everyone. 🕹 Want to get involved in August?
