Springer Nature's second hack day will bring together developers and international researchers to build and use tools to advance data sharing, reuse and discovery.

This day offers a unique chance to engage with a diverse group of researchers and developers (from organisations such as Springer Nature, Alan Turing Institute and DataCite) and take advantage of a variety of closed, proprietary and open data sources for the exploration, combining and mining of scholarly research, researcher datasets and related metadata.

Whether you already have a team in mind, or are looking to join an established team, this is your chance to be part of a highly skilled and knowledgable group and participate in a fun day solving problems (big or small) related to linking, discovering, and understanding research data.

Participating teams will be encouraged to focus their efforts on three main areas:

1. Data linking

   • Identify links and associations between articles and datasets

   • Monitor impact of and compliance with data publishing policies

   • Infer new research insights from published data

   • Make it easier to share or link to research data

2. Data visualisation

   • Create visualizations of datasets and their relationships

   • Improve the ability to understand and communicate data

   • Infer new research insights from published data

3. Data curation

   • Enhance discoverability and reuse of published datasets

   • Create tools or systems that help users curate research datasets to enable reuse

   • Improve handling of data and creation of metadata
     

Participants are also welcome to propose specific themes, challenges and data sources ahead of the event.
